There has been much discussion about the first use of this style of overlay bottle with many believing they did not exist until the late 1960's or 1970's. While I believe it is true that this style was the popular "tourist" bottle in the 1970's, this bottle while devoid of any caligraphy, has a "CHINA" scratched on the bottom. This places the date somewhere between 1891-1919.The faded/peeling paint, the painting style and the subject are very common to bottles from 1910-1920. This bottle, along with others in this section, I believe confirms the use of this type of overlay bottle as early as the late 1800's or early 1900's. (Coral Springs, Fl Thrift Store find) |
